A good number of people operate under the assumption that losing weight is something that can be done on a part by part basis. While it is true that you can do exercises that tone specific areas of the body, these activities don't necessarily eliminate the fat in those areas. Instead, they firm up the muscles under the layer of fat. A good example of this would be those who do a lot of abdominal exercises- if an individual already has extra weight atop their muscles, then no amount of sit-ups and crunches are going to lessen that fatty layer.
